REAL ID Scams: What to look out for

April 30, 2025 – Published on ABC7 News New York City, NY

Cybersecurity experts are warning about a surge in REAL ID scams aimed at identity theft.

Victor Wieczorek, Senior Vice President, Offensive Security at GuidePoint Security, joined ABC 7 to share how scammers are targeting comprehensive personal information—including full names, birthdates, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license images—to enable them to open fraudulent credit accounts or file fake tax returns. These scams often involve phishing attempts posing as legitimate DMV or TSA communications and fake websites that closely resemble government pages.

To stay protected, individuals should avoid clicking suspicious links, verify government URLs ending in “.gov,” and never submit sensitive personal details through unverified channels.
