Super Bowl week sparks warning over sports betting scams

As Super Bowl week begins, and with 225 million Americans across 40 states having access to legal sports betting, experts warn that scammers are eager to exploit this lucrative market. First-time bettors are particularly vulnerable to falling for scams, which often begin with ads on social media or unsolicited messages.

These scams typically lead users to gambling sites that appear legitimate but are designed to steal personal and financial information. Experts advise that if a site asks for excessive personal details or has noticeable spelling errors and poor design, it is best to exit immediately.

“This is true for all scams involving money. Immediately notify your financial institution right then and there, the minute you find out you’ve been scammed,” said Paul Keener with GuidePoint Security. “Immediately notify your financial institution because the faster you notify them the more likely it is they will be able to recover those funds.”
