Thomasville city systems hit by cyberattack, residents worry about data security

A cyberattack has disrupted several city systems in Thomasville, leaving residents concerned and seeking answers. The breach, detected by the city’s IT officials, was discovered within the city’s digital municipal systems on Monday around 1 p.m.
City officials confirmed that criminal activity has occurred within their computer systems, but have not disclosed whether any personal or sensitive information has been accessed.
Thomasville resident Tavonte Lovett expressed his concern, saying, “Here in Thomasville, to hear about something like this is extremely odd and mindboggling. I believe I am a little bit worried because I have so much information due to the work I do,” said Lovett.
Cybersecurity Analyst Paul Keener from GuidePoint Security explained that city municipalities are prime targets for hackers due to their connections with entities that have access to large sets of personal data. “It has to do with information, right, and the connections that municipality has to law enforcement, judicial systems, schools, etc.,” said Keener.
Keener noted that hackers often aim to profit from the information they steal. “The longer they hold onto the information, the less valuable it becomes because people become more aware of what’s going on. You might do a credit freeze. That’s something that’s really important to do,” said Keener.
