Travel plans this weekend? How to avoid Labor Day scams

August 29, 2024 – Published on FOX31 Denver, CO

Labor Day travelers are being targeted by scammers more than ever.

Paul Keener of GuidePoint Security told FOX31 that in 2023, approximately 25% of all scams were travel-related. This year that number is 69%.

Keener, a cybersecurity strategist, said artificial intelligence allows scammers to create phony websites to access personal financial information. Those looking for last-minute deals are prime targets.

“There’s a lot of skilled attackers, but the thing that has been really prevalent is the AI, integration of AI, and the lowering of the technical requirements for attackers,” he said.

Major red flags are any request for permission to leave the original booking website to pay, along with any demand for payment using methods not listed in the hotel or short-term rental business’ policy, like quick cash apps.
