Scammers take advantage of looming REAL ID deadline
April 30, 2025 – Published on FOX4 News Kansas City, MO
Starting May 7, individuals must present a REAL ID to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities, unless they have a valid passport.
Cybersecurity expert Paul Keener from GuidePoint Security appeared on FOX4 to discuss a new scam targeting individuals ahead of an upcoming deadline. Scammers are using this opportunity to lure victims into visiting fraudulent websites designed to steal personal information and money.
Keener emphasized that a REAL ID in Kansas City can only be obtained in person at a DMV—there is no legitimate online option. While the process may seem inconvenient, he cautions against shortcuts that could lead to identity theft.
If someone does fall victim to a scam, they should contact their bank immediately and report the incident through IdentityTheft.gov.
