Anthropic Model Fight Spurs Industry to Hedge AI Defensive Bets

July 7, 2026 – Published on Bloomberg

The volatile environment around the cyber defense powers of Mythos and other cutting-edge AI models is causing companies to hedge their bets to avoid falling behind.

Anthropic’s Mythos and OpenAI’s latest models both promised to spot vulnerabilities across enterprise systems, but security concerns from the White House temporarily derailed industry’s path to getting access.

Security leaders at companies without access to the guarded models told Bloomberg Law they’re experimenting with AI agents, open-source models, or more expensive frontier models with fast-evolving security capabilities to defend against a new era of cyber threats.

Silicon Valley giants have been racing to get their latest AI capabilities in the hands of cyber defenders as free or inexpensive Chinese AI models grow more powerful.

After Anthropic and OpenAI released their cyber-focused models, Google and Amazon Web Services Inc. followed within weeks with artificial intelligence offerings also marketed to help companies spot and stop AI-powered cyber threats.

The pitch from Silicon Valley firms is appealing to companies looking for ways to strengthen their cyber defenses and consolidate their vendors. And it resonates even more with businesses already relying on tech platforms’ services and cloud infrastructure.

“Now I have these security capabilities that can exist within that layer. And in that sense that’s a very compelling story where there could be some high value for organizations,” said Gary Brickhouse, chief information security officer at GuidePoint Security and former security architect at The Walt Disney Co.
